Brera

A few cobbled streets north of the Duomo that were the artists’ quarter and are now the expensive version of one: galleries, restorers’ workshops, small restaurants with tables in the street, and the academy and picture gallery at the centre of it.

It is the part of Milan that looks the way people expect Italy to look, which is precisely why the rest of the city is a surprise.

What it costs

⭐ Free. It is a neighbourhood. The Pinacoteca inside the Palazzo di Brera is ticketed; the palazzo’s courtyard and the botanical garden behind it are not.

When to go

Late afternoon, when the light comes down Via Brera and the restaurants put their tables out. ⚠️ During the April design week the whole quarter becomes an exhibition and is impossible.

Getting there

Lanza on M2 or Montenapoleone on M3, both about five minutes’ walk. From the Galleria it is ten minutes on foot.

If you only have an hour

Via Brera to the Palazzo, into the courtyard, out through the botanical garden, and back down one of the side streets. Forty minutes.

What people get wrong

⚠️ Most people walk the one street. Via Brera is the spine and the quarter is the lanes off it — Via Fiori Chiari, Via Madonnina, Via Formentini. Two minutes’ detour changes the visit.
