Parco Sempione

Forty-odd hectares laid out in the 1890s on what had been the castle’s parade ground, running from the Castello Sforzesco at one end to the Arco della Pace at the other. Napoleon began the arch and the Austrians finished it, which is a fair summary of Milanese history.

It is the city’s front garden: joggers, prams, a Triennale design museum, and a steel tower by Gio Ponti you can go up.

What it costs

⭐ Free, open daily, and the arch and the lawns cost nothing. The Triennale and the tower are separately ticketed.

When to go

Weekend afternoons, when the whole city is in it. ⚠️ It closes at night and the gates are real.

Getting there

Cadorna on M1 and M2 at the castle end, Moscova on M2 at the far end. The walk through from the castle to the arch is the point.

⭐ One urban ticket lasts 90 minutes and covers the metro, the trams and the buses inside the city zones — one metro journey plus as many surface changes as you can fit. A contactless bank card works at the gate, and ⚠️ you tap the same card again on the way out of a metro station. See Getting Around.

If you only have an hour

In at the Castello, straight up the axis to the Arco della Pace, and back along one side past the Triennale. Fifty minutes, and both ends are free.

What people get wrong

⚠️ People do the castle and stop at the park gate. The axis through to the arch is fifteen minutes and it is the best free walk in the centre of Milan.
